Frequently Asked Questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of church is MissionGathering?
MissionGathering is a Progressive, Inclusive Christian Community. Our Pastor begins every sermon by stating that “sermons at MissionGathering are meant to start discussions; not end them.” We don’t claim to have all the answers, so we take the Christian Tradition seriously while also embracing other means of understanding Truth. We believe God has created us different for a reason. Therefore, we not only welcome all people, but affirm and celebrate people in all of their diversity. In other words, MissionGathering is a church of hopeful misfits that is doing our best to follow Jesus in the modern world.
What can I expect if I attend a worship service?
Our services start at 10am-ish, and last about an hour. Our “Welcome Statement” is read followed by a few worship songs. Worship songs are contemporary, and lyrics are placed on the screen at the front. After about three worship songs there will be some announcements, and then a time called “Pass the Peace” where everyone connects in conversation for a few minutes. After Pass the Peace, our Pastor (or whoever is speaking that Sunday) preaches a 20 minute sermon and serves communion. We practice “Open Table Communion '' where everyone is invited to participate in communion regardless of religious background. There is then a final word of encouragement spoken over the congregation before the worship service comes to a close.
What do I wear?
We are an extremely casual church! Most Sundays our pastor wears jeans and a t-shirt or hoodie. Although the gay men of the church wish he dressed slightly more fashionably, or at least didn’t wear all black most Sundays… So please dress however you are most comfortable!
Where do I park?
MissionGathering is located on La Mesa Boulevard, and has plenty of convenient parking both in front of the church and behind the church. There are many parking spaces that are labeled “30 minute parking” or “1 hour parking,” but those rules are specific to midweek parking. Park wherever you’d like!
Is there something for my kids?
Yes! MissionGathering has a kids ministry called MG Kids. There will be a check in stand immediately to the right of the door when you walk in. You can learn more about MG Kids here.
What’s the best way to get to MissionGathering when using public transportation?
There is public transportation that will take you to the crossroads of Mart Square (Glen Street & La Mesa Blvd) through MTS.
There are two bus stops right by us. Stop #11477 is in front of the auto shop directly across from MissionGathering, and stop #10331 is in front of the apartment complex next to MissionGathering.
